Southern Cooking
Hello and welcome to the Southern Cooking site!

I was not born in the South, but my roots are there. My mother’s family came to the United States from Ireland and Scotland in the early 1800s. They settled in Mississippi, fought in the Civil War, grew their own food, and created stories and recipes they passed down through the generations.

One of my earliest childhood memories is of sitting in my great-grandmother’s kitchen in Dallas, TX, with my mom, my grandmother and my great-grandmother making homemade fudge. I must have been 3 or 4 years old. I have many memories of cooking with my grandmother and her sisters. They always had the most wonderful stories to tell about their own memories…sitting on the back porch of their grandmother’s house churning butter; making ice box pies for the church social; the cold chicken recipe my great aunt made for a special picnic because she was going driving with a boy that´s what they called a date!). Things were simpler then.

I love food! I love to cook and experiment with different ingredients, enhancing standard recipes and creating my own. The kitchen in which I was raised was a melting pot of cuisines. I have a great love for many of them, including Indian, Mexican, Italian and Irish, but Southern food for me has a romance to it because of the stories I grew up listening to from my family.

I’m a single mom with a beautiful little girl and I love cooking for and with her. We spend a lot of time with my mom, too, hearing the stories of her youth and cooking. I’m excited to share some of my stories and recipes here and I hope that you too will share yours with our Southern Cooking community!
